WIW 7/12-7/14, Dressy week

Hi all! I realized it's dressy dress week for me. My style is varying a lot but I feel like I'm starting to figure out how to emphasize my best parts. While I may not have a cohesive style statement like many others here, I definitely have dressing goals. I want to make curves where I don't have much. How am I doing?

1) AT dress, Sofft Pavia's. This is my summer "important" work day dress. I need to look polished, authoritative and approachable here.

2) Kids Target denim vest, vintage silk midi. The vest got some mixed reviews, but Angie gave it a thumbs up so I decided to give it a whirl. I liked this new way to wear my midi. It feels more fun and natural for me than wearing a cardigan. It felt very 70's. My coworker said, "You actually look good today" like she was surprised that all these pieces worked together. Talk about a cutting compliment!

3) Calypso St. Barth's for Target dress, DV golden gladiators, hubby's braided belt. Any suggestions for another type of belt? This feels dark but I'm not having any other bright ideas at the moment.

Feedback and suggestions always welcome! Thanks for looking and have a great day!

I think it is okay to have some variance to your style, and I don't think that means you can't have a cohesive style. We all wear different hats and that requires different spins on our style. I think your clearly outlined goals will help solidify your style.

    1) I feel like you achieved everything you set out to with this look. Of course since it is black and white, I'd love to see some red, but you definitely have great polish here.

    2) Don't you hate when people say things like that?! I think this is fun and casual, but polished too.

    3) I love the color of the dress! I like the dark caramel against the teal since they are both saturated colors, but if you want to lighten it up try sand or even yellow if you have it.

    Grr re tacky colleague.

You look posh and polished in every single one.

You look great! How about a red or cobalt belt with the turquoise dress? Think of MaryK and her mix of turquoise and cobalt. A yellow green might also be fun. For a lighter neutral, how about a grey or pewter?

You look fab in that black and white dress, FAB!!!

Oh my. Your co-worker needs a lesson in tact and manners.

You look fabulous, Rita! You absolutely have a cohesive style and are doing great.

I LOVE #2. Perfect in every way :)

You look amazing and your co-worker is a dork! I LOVE the dress in the first photo -- just perfection!! With the blue dress I might do a metallic belt. Also, Target has some great multi-colored belts right now that might be fun with that dress. Or I might do my navy belt or even white. Or tan. Or, you know, red. ;)

Love your dress week. You look great in all of them. My favorite is #1

By the way, you have a fantastic kitchen!

Each outfit looks great. I am wondering if your co-worker might be just a little intimidated by how consistently stylish you are! Sadly, I find these kind of comments are often born from insecurity:). Your little boy is very handsome and I love your new profile pic. Oh and re the belt for outfit no. 3 sometimes I like a bit of "matchy matchy" so I wonder if a nude colored belt might work? Just a thought:)

Thanks for the feedback. It's nice to hear that my wardrobe tricks are working :)

@Angie, I'm glad you approve of the vest/midi combo!

@MaryK, et al, of course I'll have to try all of these belt suggestions. I am a bit of a belt-a-holic, I usually buy leather ones at thrift stores for $1-2. I'll have to try some different options with the turquoise dress and post them here for review.

You are lovely. My favorite is 1. No, wait, 2. Well, 3 is really pretty too.

1: love the belt, shoes and necklace you chose with that dress. It also suits your hairstyle.

2: I relate a lot with this outfit, love the soft/rough contrast between the skirt and vest, love the jewelery that you picked with it too. It's very summery, breezy yet rock and roll. The pumps are perfect because they give a lift but the nude color does not attract attention to them. And your kid is so cute! (Always best accessory, in my opinion).

3: The first time I didn't like it so much but it's actually quite beautiful. I think it's the footwear and/or the belt that bother me in this one... although it's a very personal preference. It's very stylish and daring.
Also if I may: play around with the makeup on this one... I don't have your coloring so I can't help, but it looks to me that soft coral based is not the right color for the brightness of the dress. In my experience with brighter colors, esp. blue, bronzer and a bit of eye definition is always the best bet. It might also just be the lighting. In any case you are beautiful.

You look lovely every single day, Rita! I agree that maybe your co-worker is a bit freaked out and intimidated by your mad style skillz :). The dress in #1 is perfect; the outfit in #2 is cool, chic, and has lots of personality; and the dress in #3 is beautiful too. You are rocking your style, woman!

A great week and lots of variety - that keeps things fun and less predictable :-)

Your co-worker is something else! She was probably surprised at how well you styled the midi, or the denim vest, or something unexpected and that's why she said the *actually* . No matter what she said or how she said it, you definitely looked fab!

#3 - what about one of those colorful woven belts that goes through a D-ring - they are just as summery as that cute dress. . .

  • nicoleb replied 12 years ago

I think you look great in each one! And omg what a horrible co-worker. @_@

  • rae replied 12 years ago

    Every outfit is beautiful!

The Target dress is such a pretty color - I like the brown belt with it, but would wear darker colored sandals to go with that particular belt - to echo the rugged menswear effect. For the nude shoes, you might try a silver chain belt or even a different shade of turquoise.

Your co-worker sounds a little off - we see your WIWs regularly here, and you always look chic and put together. Maybe she is on medication... ;)

I love these! I don't know what the heck is up with your co-worker. I just can't imagine. But pay her NO mind!

  • Ginny replied 12 years ago

I agree pay no mind to the coworker!!!! You have great dress week, black and white is very poilished and my fav is #2 love this look!!!

  • carrie replied 12 years ago

Very stylish! I love all three outfits and you have some fantastic nude-toned shoes!

  • krishnidoux replied 12 years ago

Just wanted to add that your co worker showed by her comment that she has no class. You, on the other hand, do.

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Great dressy week! I love the colors in #1, but would prefer no necklace and perhaps some pearl studs instead; this high neckline looks really nice with your new shorter hair cut! #2 is my favorite, fantastic pairing for both vest and midi; the stiffer denim with the flowy silk is awesome. I do think #3 needs a lighter belt; how about cognac, light tan, or mustard?

  • celia replied 12 years ago

I love how that black and white dress looks on you.
Outfit #2 is great and totally copycat worthy. I don't have a midi but will do a variation of it.

  • ManidipaM replied 12 years ago

It speaks for itself that though my personal vibe is closest to #2 (and I love it! especially the curvy shape of the jacket), it is #1 that is my favourite here! So sophisticated and chic.

As for #3, I like it as is too, but if you don't have a lighter belt, is there a necklace or ribbon you could try instead?
