Retro Bombshells, do you ever feel like you've jumped the shark?

Do you ever feel like you've gone too far with this look? I returned a pair of red pumps a few weeks ago because I felt like they would push my outfits into costume territory.

Now I am considering the hot pink Kate Spade pumps and I'm concerned about the same thing. Do you ever worry about looking too Betty Boop?

I'm probably not the right person to respond since I've worn red and white polka dot shoes with a red and white polka jacket over a floral dress!!!

I don't think those gorgeous pink pumps will make anything look costumey Rita. I find my Doc Sara's can be troublesome like when I paired them with my red and white polka dot jacket and felt a little like Minnie Mouse all day. But these pink beauties are too classy to be seen as anything else. And it's all in what you pair them with.

I agree with Shannon, Rita. You could wear the pink pumps in so many different ways,

You don't do winged black eyeliner, red lipstick and a victory roll. I think those shoes will be fine.

They went down in price and they are on their way to me. You'll all be the judges soon.

I'll stand with the others and say that these beauties are classic, feminine footwear and I'm so glad they are now yours.

WHOO HOO Rita!!! I'm so excited for you!

The shoes are a beautiful and classic style. Definitely NOT Betty Boopish! They are lovely in both the pink and the blue.

  • Inge replied 11 years ago

    Excellent news:-)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Wow - I just checked the price. That's quite the reduction...makes me kinda drool a bit over the blue ones...

I'm probably not one to talk either since I consider myself sort of retro-bombshell and go for pretty crazy looks myself but I think those pink pumps look very classic and not costumey at all. Pink is a neutral, right? I'm glad you're getting them!

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Many of us here flirt with that costumey line at times, so it's definitely possilbe to wear a statement piece like that without jumping the shark. Hey, if I can wear knee high, strap-rivet-and-shin-guard bedecked boots to my job at the bank, pink pumps should be A-ok for you. Like Anna said, you aren't doing the full retro hair and makeup thing at the same time.

I love them for you! This is so not my style, so I am quick to think it's costumey, and these shoes are not in any way OTT to me. They look very classic and modern at the same time, even in pink. Sometimes I think Kate Spade is my shadow style, though ONLY Kate Spade and not the general look.

  • replied 11 years ago

I love them. I hope you enjoy wearing them.

Well, I am probably a terrible person to ask since I love the full on Rockabilly look (it's just so not me) but no, I don't think those shoes are pushing into costume territory at all.

As Anna said, it's the details that would push it into that area. (and even then I would say go for it!)

I think they are fab. I have LOVED my pink KS pumps (with rainbow heels, yet already!) and don't feel the least bit costumey in them. So glad you took the plunge!

And if I weren't on SYC, those blue ones might well be on their way to me...

  • Sara L. replied 11 years ago

They look like classic pumps to me in a fun bright color. I don't think retro when I look at them.

  • Jaime replied 11 years ago

What's wrong with Betty Boop? I am not a pumps person, but I am short and I would wear these without hesitation.

    1. Goldenpig: I almost hit the floor laughing! "Pink is a neutral, right?" Love it! I'm with you, let's call it a neutral!!

    2. modgrl- those shoes are so perfect, and classic. I think of Betty Boop shoes as more mary jane-like, and with a strap. Not over the top at all! can't wait to see them!

I love those shoes and to me they seem like they would be pretty versatile.

To answer your general question, I struggle with the same. It's a look I gravitate to because I think it suits me very well but I constantly battle with whether I'm going too costume-ish.

When I had the custom dresses made over the summer I was careful to not pick the red polka dots for instance because I was afraid the combo of the style and the dots would be too much into that territory. I do have a red polka dotted top though with the same vibe that I feel is easier to mix up.

Sometimes I just go for it though, because at the end of the day, costume or not, I really like the style and I think it looks great on me.

Theodora--it's a little YLF joke--whenever someone wants to buy or wear something brightly colored or loudly patterned but isn't sure if it's going to be too much, we justify it by saying it's a neutral! Red is a neutral for sure, and apparently so is leopard print according to MaryK.

Rita--I for one would love to find some red Betty Boop pumps! After your urging in my other thread and this one, I broke down and ordered a pair of cobalt blue ones from Nordstrom at the 40% off. I also had them price match a pair of turquoise ones at the local Kate Spade shop. Not sure which color to keep. Will have to see which one looks more versatile when they arrive! Thanks Rita! I think you'll look great in your pink ones!
